My name is Jennifer Christopherson

Registered Counselling Therapist | BA, BSW, MACP, CCC

I have worked in human services and healthcare since the late 1990s, with a focus on supporting neurodivergent individuals and families since 2004. As a neurodivergent woman myself—and as a parent and partner in a neurodivergent household—I bring both professional training and lived experience to my work. I understand the realities of masking, burnout, sensory overwhelm, and the emotional labour that often goes unseen.

My background includes a Bachelor of Psychology, a Bachelor of Social Work, and a Master of Counselling in Counselling Psychology. I practice from a trauma‑informed, neurodiversity‑affirming perspective, offering a space where clients can show up as their authentic selves without judgment or pressure to fit a mold.

My personal history also shapes how I support others. I grew up navigating trauma from a young age, and as the spouse of an injured military veteran who served for 27 years, I have lived the challenges of military family life—frequent relocations across Canada, long periods of uncertainty, and the demands of caregiving. These experiences deepen my understanding of resilience, identity, and the many ways people adapt to overwhelming circumstances.

Where It Began

My path to becoming a therapist began with lived experience, growing up in an environment shaped by fear, instability, and emotional neglect where I learned to survive by staying small and putting others first. These early experiences left invisible wounds that shaped how I saw myself and moved through the world, long before I had the language to understand I was living with the effects of trauma.

The Turning Point

Over time, survival turned into determination, leading me to pursue education not just to change my circumstances but to understand trauma, resilience, and the patterns that shape our lives. Through both personal and professional experiences — including life alongside an injured military veteran — I came to understand that healing isn’t linear, but it is possible.

Why I Do This Work

Becoming a therapist wasn’t just a career choice, but a calling to support those navigating trauma, burnout, ADHD, autism, and the pressure to always be “the strong one.” I offer a safe, compassionate, and judgment-free space where your story is honored, your pace is respected, and healing can unfold in a way that feels grounded and authentic.

FAQ

  • What can I expect at the first visit

Our first session generally is about 80 minutes, however I bill only for an hour. During this time, we will review the consent form that you completed, and I will complete an intake form. I approach counselling from a holistic perspective as often our internal struggles can be expressed externally, so I like to understand how you are doing as a whole. We will also explore what brought you to therapy and what you would like to work on.

  • Rates, Insurance & Sliding Scale Options

A regular session is 50 minutes long and my current rate is $160/hr.

At this time I do not direct bill. Many insurance companies will accept a receipt for a "counsellor or therapist" that is certified by a regulatory body such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA). Please check your extended benefits for more information.

If you are facing financial hardship, please contact me. I take on a limited number of sliding-scale clients.

  • My Education & Experience

    Bachelor’s in Psychology & Anthropology

Understanding what shapes us — our family systems, our lived experiences, and the ways we’ve learned to move through the world — is foundational to healing. My early academic work focused on how people develop, adapt, and make meaning within their environments.

I later worked in behavioral consulting, supporting families and care home staff while developing and implementing behavioral programs that centered dignity, clarity, and compassion.

    Bachelor of Social Work

For the past ten years, I’ve worked as a medical social worker supporting adults and families navigating:

    • Chronic and complex illnesses

    • Traumatic life transitions

    • PTSD and mental health conditions

    • Personality disorders

    • Family estrangement

    • Addictions

    • Grief and loss

    • Terminal illness

    • Dementia

This work taught me how deeply people are shaped by their histories — and how profoundly they can grow when they’re met with understanding and choice.

    Master’s in Counselling Psychology

In healthcare, I witnessed how many people carry the long-term effects of trauma, unmet needs, and coping strategies that once protected them but now feel limiting.

I believe every person wants to live with purpose and authenticity. My role is to help you explore who you are, how your experiences have shaped you, and what you need now to move toward a life that feels aligned, grounded, and genuinely yours.
